How to choose your childminder

Choosing childcare and early education is a big step for you and your child. Try and give yourself enough time to visit several possible options in your area to get a good idea of what could suit your child. Don't forget you are the expert on your child and should trust your feelings. It can be a good idea to take your child with you to see how they get on with the childminder. It can also be a good idea to go when children are there so you can see if they appear settled, happy and busy.

Suggested Questions

Here are some suggested questions to ask when you visit. Add your own questions as well:

  1. How long have you been working with children?
  2. Have you undertaken any training for your job?
  3. Do you have any qualifications?
  4. Why do you enjoy working with children?
  5. Can I look around to see the rooms and outside play space?
  6. If there is no outside play space - how will you make sure my child gets the chance to play outside?
  7. Where will my child rest?
  8. What kind of food and drink will you give?
  9. What will my child do all day?
  10. How do you encourage good behaviour?
  11. Will my child be with a regular group of children? How old are they?
  12. How will you make sure I know how my child is getting on?
  13. What happens if my child is unwell?

You should ask to see copies of the childminders policy documents, registration and public liability insurance certificates. There should be lots of evidence of play and activities. Be very wary of a childminders house that looks like a show home.

It is important to talk to other parents who currently use the service. Ask for contact details and speak to them independently. Talk to a range of people about the service and don’t be afraid to tell the childminder what you’ve found out. A good childminder is always looking for ways of improving the service they offer.

If you want to talk to someone regarding choosing a childminder contact the Scottish Childminding Association.
